The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) framework verifies organizations’ maturity in protecting unclassified information, such as Federal Contract Information (FCI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

CMMC establishes a new set of cybersecurity standards that incorporates various cybersecurity references, standards, and other best practices. It defines multiple processes and practices, organized across five cumulative certification levels.

The Department of Defense (DoD) develops and manages the CMMC model, using it as its response to potential compromises of sensitive information stored on Defense Industrial Base (DIB) systems and networks. The CMMC Accreditation Body (CyberAB) serves as the sole authoritative source for operationalizing CMMC assessments and training.

Security incidents have also affected the Defense Industrial Base and the Department of Defense (DoD) supply chain. The DoD recognizes the need to protect its unclassified information to reduce risks to national economic and overall security.

To address this, the DoD released the CMMC framework. It assesses and enhances the cybersecurity posture of organizations across the DoD contractor community. Since CMMC sets a cybersecurity standard, the DoD will eventually require all contractors—including small businesses, commercial item contractors, and other suppliers—to obtain CMMC certification.
